Employees

Employees are the cornerstone of our business. At the end of 2022, we employed over 21 000 people.

Employee relations

In 2022 Anglo American Platinum signed a five-year wage agreement with three of its four recognised unions representing 90% of unionised employees, namely the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (“AMCU”), The National Union of Mineworkers (“NUM”) and UASA – The Union (“UASA”), enabling the implementation of the new wage agreement across all relevant employees. The agreement was signed before the expiry of the current agreement and was implemented from 1 July 2022. The wage agreement increases salary and salary-related allowances which will increase the total labour cost-to-company, on average by 6.6 % per annum over the five-year period.

Together, building trust and a rewarding workplace is how we can create real value.

Investing in our skills base

Having a skilled, diverse, motivated and productive workforce is fundamental to delivering our business strategy. Our human resource development is a vital strategic tool to ensure continuous employee engagement, top performance and quality service delivery. It is also integral to our workplace transformation. We strive to:

  • Attract and retain the best talent
  • Offer meaningful and stimulating work
  • Provide opportunities for personal development
  • Pay people competitively
  • Recognise and reward excellence
  • Encourage diversity

We have a good pipeline of skills, particularly at entry level as a result of our graduate and fast-tracking programmes. We take an integrated approach to recruitment, talent management and retention in an effort to meet the demand for HDSA candidates, including women, at managerial level.

We invest in the development of our people, giving them the skills and resources they need to grow with our industry and with our company.

Notes

Our training and development programmes include:

  • Adult basic education and training
  • Skills development, including safety training; operational risk management programmes; training of occupational safety and health representatives; Zero Harm training; and visible felt leadership training
  • Engineering training schemes
  • Fast-tracking programmes which address skills shortages in engineering and mining and help us meet our Mining Charter target
  • Leadership development for various tiers of management
  • Young professionals programme aimed at supporting our pipeline of professionals and helping meet our employment equity targets. We provide bursaries and graduate in-training programmes in the various engineering fields as well as geology, metallurgy, mine surveying and finance. Transformation

Ensuring compliance with the Employment Equity Act 1998, BBBEE Act 2003, and Section 28(2)c of the MPRDA is a key driver of our transformation approach. Yet our ambition goes beyond compliance, to unlocking the value-creation potential of inclusion and diversity. The requirements of these different pieces of legislation are allocated to appropriate functions across the company. They in turn implement initiatives and conduct regular audits to identify risks and close gaps. Information on our transformation progress and performance is distributed across the social sections of this report, particularly trusted corporate leader and building thriving communities

Women in mining

Mmabatho Angel Maje

Senior shift supervisor, Amandelbult Complex

Mmabatho Angel Maje

Senior shift supervisor, Amandelbult Complex

Mmabatho’s career journey in the mining industry certainly has been anything but linear. In 2001, after graduating with an HR management diploma from Pretoria College (now the Tshwane TVET College) she saw the opportunity to become an inspirational game-changer by being the first person in her family to work in the mining industry.

Despite facing multiple challenges around barriers to entry in her professional career, she persevered and amassed several mining qualifications, gaining experience in various positions including as shift supervisor, mine overseer and senior human resource development officer.

She joined Anglo-American Platinum in 2011 and is currently employed as a senior shift supervisor at Amandelbult Complex, where she is responsible for rolling out modernisation projects to increase efficiencies, promote productivity and ultimately improve employee safety in line with the industry’s Zero Harm imperatives. In her 12 years with Anglo American Platinum, Mmabatho has witnessed the company going beyond resilience and thriving through change in a number of functions, especially in terms of gender mainstreaming.

Mmabatho’s journey has inspired her to use her privilege to improve people’s lives. She supports young women who are studying towards industry-related qualifications through mentorship, coaching and psychosocial support. She encourages them to work hard and focus on their career development, but she also reminds them to live their lives fully and to ensure that they make room for others.

Alexandra Rantso

Commercial manager, Precious Metals Refinery

Alex’s journey in the mining industry began in 2008 when she joined Anglo American Platinum as a finance graduate. Through the graduate programme, she rotated between different operations including Mogalakwena, Head office, Anglo American Business Assurance Services (ABAS) and Waterval Concentrator, building her career in finance.

Alex thereafter worked her way up to positions including senior accountant, management accountant and performance manager, most recently being appointed as a commercial manager at Precious Metals Refinery (PMR) in 2021. In her current role, she is responsible for performance management, risk management, governance, reporting and business improvement. Alex also contributes to engagements with internal and external stakeholders, including our host communities, with the goal of making the business more sustainable in perception and reality.

In line with her commitment to lifelong learning, Alex recently completed her advanced diploma in management accounting from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and is set to complete her Chartered Global Management Accountant accreditation towards the end of 2023.

In her 15 years of experience in the mining industry, Alex has observed how perceptions of the work and of the industry have changed, noting a broader increase and prioritisation of engagement and collaboration with stakeholders. She values the positive impact that the industry can have on the country as a whole and enjoys that her role as a commercial manager is also people-centric.

Alex’s advice to young women is for them to know their strengths and skills and create a network to support them through their professional growth. She also implores them to avail themselves to opportunities – however small – when they arise.

Fahmida Smith

Market development principal

Fahmida Smith

Market development principal

Fahmida Smith's journey in the mining industry began in 1995, after completing her diploma in chemical engineering at Wits Technikon. She has experience as a process controller, supervisor and plant superintendent in precious metals refinery operations, as a project manager and technical manager in both precious and base metals refineries, as well as being a seasoned market development manager. Fahmida has accumulated various industry-related qualifications and is currently studying toward a master’s in business administration, set to be completed in 2023.

Stepping into her current role as market development principal for Platinum in 2019, Fahmida is focused on the wider market development ecosystem, hydrogen, fuel cells, battery technologies, the use of PGMs in modern life to improve day-to-day life, as well as investment opportunities in the use of PGM's for jewellery design and beneficiation.

Almost three decades in the industry have come with a fair number of challenges, including often being the only woman in the room. Fahmida proved her worth through hard work, a positive attitude and treating stakeholders with respect. For her, the biggest shift in the platinum mining industry has been witnessing Natascha Viljoen become the first female CEO.

Fahmida’s leadership philosophy of allowing room for mistakes and growth, while guiding and steering people in the right direction, has helped her understand that no experience is wasted, and there is always room for learning.

Passionate about mentorship, sharing ideas and helping younger professionals build on their skills, her advice to young women interested in entering the industry is to speak up, build their skills and capacity, and always strive to do their best while living the values of care and respect.

She hopes to see more women in leadership roles in traditionally male-dominated industries, where they can take their rightful place in helping to shape a more inclusive, brighter and greener tomorrow for future generations.

Khomotso Phuti Mothupi

Khomotso Phuti Mothupi

Drill Rig Operator at Mogalakwena Complex

Khomotso Phuti Mothupi hails from one of the host communities around Mogalakwena complex-Malepetleke Village. She matriculated from a local high school- Matsibe Secondary School in 2017.

She began her journey in the mining industry in 2019 when she joined Mogalakwena complex through a Learnership programme focused on drilling and was permanently employed as a Drill rig operator in 2020.

Khomotso has observed her role change over the years in line with the technological advancements aimed at making mining safer and more inclusive. She went from being part of the first group at Mogalakwena to be trained with the Pit Viper 351 D in 2019, a machine that drills large holes in hard rock, to being a drill rig operator tasked with operating hoisting equipment control panels, monitoring the progress of operations, and supervising the on-site service crew and all operations of the rig from the pit to presently a drill rig operator based in the control room.

Being one of the first young women to operate the drill rig machine from the drilling control room using cutting-edge automation technology inspires many of Khomotso’s colleagues to exceed expectations and to go against all odds to achieve their career goals. Her journey reflects an increased female representation and inclusivity in the space of technology.

Khomotso finds herself in spaces that get her both excited and nervous, but most importantly that allow her to show her mettle. She is reaping the full value of her contribution to Anglo American Platinum’s safety culture. Her role has awarded the opportunity to share her profound knowledge of how to operate the automated drill rig with various stakeholders including our Anglo American Platinum CEO , our union member representatives, and some of our colleagues.

Since joining Anglo American Platinum, Khomotso obtained both site operating and automation licenses for the Pit Viper 351-D blasthole drill rig, DML 45 rotary blasthole drill rig, and the Pit Viper 271 rotary blasthole rig. She also holds Competent A and Blasting Assistant certificates from the Mining Qualification Authority issued by Anglo American.

Khomotso’s goal is to continue to expand her knowledge in the industry. She advises young women to remain ambitious and determined in their careers and be comfortable with communicating with people and learning about their journeys to allow for growth in the industry.

We are making good progress with our provision of family housing units and single accommodation, and are on track to meet our Mining Charter targets. We believe that home ownership is important and promote and facilitate home ownership among our employees through our housing scheme.
