Brighter futures ahead
Anglo American Platinum and local business partners Collaborit Asset Management Engineering and Zutari, has taken a significant step towards educational enhancement.
Thursday 8 February 2024 marked a special day for the learners of Modise Secondary School in Mantserre and Makuka Secondary School in Sefikile. Thanks to the generosity of their benefactors, these schools, nestled within the Anglo American Platinum's host communities, received a treasure trove of educational material and study guides.
Aimed at Grades 10 to 12 learners, the initiative zeroes in on key subjects like mathematics, science, and mathematics literacy. The contribution includes 95 past paper booklets for mathematics, 59 for science, 97 for mathematics literacy, along with 180 cellphone SD cards brimming with digital video lessons and other resources. This thoughtful effort is geared towards equipping learners with the necessary tools to excel academically, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.
The donations were part of a broader corporate social investment, with Collaborit Asset Management Engineering and Zutari stepping in to support Modise and Makuka Secondary Schools, respectively. More than just a transfer of resources, this initiative is a beacon of hope, inspiring learners to reach for the stars in their educational and future career pursuits.
Modise Secondary School, which currently hosts 352 learners, has already shown promising results, boasting a commendable 75% matric pass rate for the class of 2023. "Last year, out of 24 Grade 12 students, 18 passed, a testament to our students' resilience and determination. We're especially proud of our advancements in key subjects, achieving a 40% pass rate in physical science and an impressive 60% in mathematics," shared Grace Mataboge, the school's acting headmaster.
The community's response has been overwhelmingly positive, with learners expressing gratitude and excitement about the new resources. Goitsi Motheelane, a Grade 10 learner at Modise, dreams of becoming a medical doctor and sees the study guides as a significant aid in his journey. Meanwhile, Grade 11 student Oratile Moratsi emphasises the importance of passion and respect for teachers as keys to learning and success.
The initiative is hailed as a game-changer by educators and students alike, with many expressing confidence that these resources could have led to even better outcomes had they been available sooner. Patricia Nawane, Makuka Secondary School's deputy principal, and Hopefulness Rantloka, a mathematics teacher at the same school, both anticipate that these materials will significantly boost the learners’ academic performance.
This collective effort not only highlights the power of partnership but also sets a bright example of how collaboration can pave the way for educational excellence and future success.
I am excited about the study guides; it’s going to make things easier for us to study!

This donation is incredibly beneficial, given our current situation where the availability of textbooks is insufficient to meet the needs of all our learners. These study guides will fill a crucial gap in our resources, providing much-needed support for our students. We are eager to integrate these materials into our curriculum and are optimistic about the positive impact they will have on our students' academic performance.
