Anglo American Platinum is pleased to announce that it will demonstrate a platinum-based fuel cell generator to attendees at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP17) to be held in Durban, South Africa.
The zero emission fuel cell system will demonstrate clean energy production during COP 17 by supplying power to the local electricity grid. The 150 kilowatt fuel cell will use hydrogen to generate electricity. COP 17 delegates and visitors will have the opportunity to see the fuel cell installation situated close to the conference venue at the Greyville Racecourse.
“This demonstration highlights the importance of fuel cells to our business. Fuel cell power systems in commercial production can increase the energy efficiency of our mining operations, make efficient use of by-product hydrogen in South Africa and provide growth in global platinum demand. Fuel cells further highlight the green credentials of platinum – in this case as an enabler of energy efficiency,” said Neville Nicolau, Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American Platinum Limited .
Platinum-based fuel cells offer high efficiency, versatility and scalability and have the potential to be an important element in the transition to a low-carbon economy by enabling the provision of clean, reliable and cost-effective power.
