Anglo Platinum appoints Cynthia Carroll as Chairman to succeed Fred Phaswana

05 July, 2010

Anglo Platinum is pleased to announce that Cynthia Carroll, Chief Executive of Anglo American plc, has been appointed Chairman of Anglo Platinum with effect from 1 September 2010. Cynthia Carroll’s appointment follows Fred Phaswana’s resign

The Anglo Platinum Board has unanimously supported the appointment of Cynthia Carroll as Chairman, following her nomination by Anglo American plc. Anglo American is the majority shareholder of Anglo Platinum and the appointment of Cynthia Carroll as Chairman continues the approach of drawing the Anglo Platinum Chairman from the Anglo American Board, of which Fred Phaswana was also a member for almost seven years.

The Board has also appointed Valli Moosa as Deputy Chairman and Lead Independent Non-executive Director and Chairman of the Governance Committee. Valli Moosa replaces Tom Wixley who has served in that role for nine years and who will continue in his role as an Independent Non-executive Director and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee.

Fred Phaswana said: "Our shared views and close working relationship give me great confidence that Cynthia will continue to work highly effectively with the rest of the Board and will provide continuity of leadership for Anglo Platinum. This appointment deeply affirms Anglo American’s commitment, not only to Anglo Platinum, but to South Africa as a whole and I have no doubt that Cynthia Carroll’s intimate knowledge of the business and understanding of the broader landscape position her well for her new role as Chairman."

Cynthia Carroll added: "Fred has been an outstanding Chairman, we wish him well and thank him for his huge contribution to Anglo Platinum over the last four years. I also thank Tom for his diligence and guidance during his tenure as Deputy Chairman and welcome Valli into his new role. I am delighted to accept the role of Chairman of Anglo Platinum and I look forward to leading the Board in support of the management team’s strategy that is in place to deliver maximum value to all of Anglo Platinum’s shareholders."

Neville Nicolau, CEO of Anglo Platinum, concluded: "We are delighted to welcome Cynthia and Valli to their new roles and I look forward to their continued advice, support and leadership as we continue to deliver on our strategy. I have worked closely with Cynthia since I became CEO of Anglo Platinum, during a time when we have achieved a significant restructuring and operational turnaround of the world’s leading platinum company.
