Ga-tshaba Community Issue

09 May, 2006

Anglo Platinum’s Potgietersrust Platinums mine has since 1991 been engaged in mining and mining developments around the Mokopane area. Due to the impact of its current and future activities on local communities, Anglo Platinum has and continues to extensively consult affected communities and has reached mutually satisfactory agreements with them. Great care is taken to ensure that such affected communities are not adversely affected by such developments and are uplifted by them, through, for instance, the establishment of essential services, employment and business opportunities.

A recent article in The Star’s and its sister publications Business Report referred to the potential loss of grazing and ploughing rights suffered by certain members of the Ga-Tshaba community on the Zwartfontein and Overysel farms. The company wishes to advise that it has negotiated resettlement arrangements over those farms with the communities currently resident on those farms.

The Ga-Tshaba community, represented by Mr Richard Spoor, is not resident on the abovementioned farms and certain members claim that some traditional rights have been affected by recent Anglo Platinum project activity over those farms. Anglo Platinum is currently investigating these claims. Anglo Platinum remains committed to significant local development and beneficiaries of such developments include communities and contribute to significant local economic growth.
