Anglo Platinum Strike Update

12 October, 2004

After protracted negotiations between Anglo Platinum and the various Unions and Association in the collective bargaining forum of the Group, the company is pleased to announce that, with the exception of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), all other Unions and Associations have reached agreement on wages and substantive conditions of employment for a one year period ending June 30, 2005. The company remains concerned about the NUM's rejection of the latest offer, particularly because the great majority of their members are willing to accept the current offer. For the record, less than 50% of the NUM members remain on industrial action at the company's operations and more of these striking employees are returning to work.

Given the above situation, the company believes that it would be unfair that a few individuals compromise the majority of the NUM members who are at work and willing to accept the offer. The company's final offer will be implemented immediately, back-dated to 1 July 2004 for those members whose unions have reached agreement. The principle of no-work-no-pay will continue to apply.

The parties that have agreed to the offer ranging between 7.75% for the higher grades, 8.0% for the lower grades and 9.5% for the lowest grades are the following:

  • United Associations of South Africa (UASA);
  • National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA);
  • Solidarity;
  • Togetherness Amalgamated Workers Union of South Africa (TAWUSA);
  • The Alliance, comprising Mouthpeace Workers Union (MPWU), Building, Motor, Engineering and Allied Workers Union (BMEAWU), Commercial Union of South Africa (CUSA), Steel, Engineering, Metal, Commercial Workers Union (STEMCWU)
