Anglo Platinum advises that on 20 September 2004, following CCMA process, the company reached deadlock on the annual substantive negotiations for the 2004/2005 period with National Union of Mineworkers (NUM); Togetherness Amalgamated Workers Union of South Africa (TAWUSA); Solidarity; United Association of South Africa (UASA); National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the Alliance, comprising Commercial Unions of South Africa (CUSA); Building, Motor Engineering and Allied Workers Union (BMEAWU); Mouthpeace Workers Union (MPWU) and Steel Engineering, Metal, Commercial Workers Union (STEMCWU). The company’s final wage offer of 7.5% was rejected by the Unions and Associations mentioned above.
Subsequently, the company received notices from TAWUSA and NUM advising of their respective members’ intention to embark on industrial action effective Tuesday, 28 September 2004. The company communicated to the Unions and Associations its revised offer, resulting in NUM and Anglo Platinum meeting on Thursday, 30 September 2004 to discuss this offer. Regrettably, the NUM rejected the new offer and opted for a strike, joining TAWUSA who are currently on strike at the company’s Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM). Anglo Platinum believes that its revised total wage offer is fair and reasonable considering the current inflation rate and outlook.
The company remains open to negotiations and will continue engaging the other Unions and Associations not involved in strike action.
