Anglo Platinum and the Department of Minerals and Energy address processing of Mining Authorisation Applications
After a number of meetings with the Department of Minerals and Energy ("the Department"), Anglo Platinum is pleased to announce that an agreement which is subject to ratification by the Anglo Platinum board and the Minister of Minerals and Energy, has been reached. The agreement provides for the fulfilment of government policy and transformation objectives, and satisfies Anglo Platinum’s need for security of tenure. Anglo Platinum has provided the Department with all relevant information required by current legislation to allow all of its currently lodged mining authorisation applications to be processed. The Department has undertaken to process these applications on an urgent basis and the majority of these mining authorisations are expected by the end of July 2002. Two of the applications, when granted, will remove the need for the current court action between Anglo Platinum and the Department.
The Department will process mining authorisation applications for extensions to existing operations in terms of current legislation. These authorisations will convert to new order mining licenses with a BEE component within the five-year time frame required by the new Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Bill.
Anglo Platinum continues to support the objectives of the Bill as demonstrated by its extensive BEE transactions to date. In line with this support Anglo Platinum has undertaken to include a BEE component in all current and future applications for new mining projects.
