Anglo Platinum management and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are pleased to jointly announce that they have reached agreement on wages and other conditions of employment. The agreement, which was reached today, brings to an end the strike by members of the NUM at Anglo Platinum mines.
Anglo Platinum and the NUM would also like to state that the agreement is for a period of two years, which includes a 9% increase on basic wages with effect from 1 July 2000 and a further 9% increase with effect from 1 July 2001. The parties have agreed that the member contribution to the provident fund, as per the agreement reached in July 2000, be referred to the partnership forum, which consists of management and all trade unions and associations, for discussion. This is the only aspect of the said July agreement which will be referred to the partnership forum for discussion.

NUM Industrial Action update 11 October 2000
Anglo Platinum management advises that there was a march by about 700 NUM striking members to the Company’s offices in Johannesburg today. The striking employees converged outside the company’s offices and handed their memorandum to management. It is management’s view that the NUM’s demands have been met and the company would like to reiterate its position regarding the current impasse and the subsequent demands from the Union as per their memorandum.
- A forum comprising labour (unions and associations) and management was jointly established by all the parties in July 2000 to address issues of common interest;
- Management’s final wage offer is 9% for 2000 and a further 9% for 2001 wage cycle;
- The company increased its contribution on the provident fund by 2% with effect from 1 July 2000 as formally agreed with all unions and associations, including the NUM;
- Management has agreed to provide transport and, in some instances, accommodation for NUM shopstewards attending the collective bargaining meetings as well as time off to caucus, if necessary;
- Management has implemented the 9% wage offer to all its employees, including the NUM striking and non-striking members, backdated to 1 July 2000.
Management therefore urges the striking employees to return to work as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the no-work-no-pay policy will continue to apply to striking employees.

NUM Industrial Action update 02 October 2000
Members of the NUM at the Anglo Platinum process division are ignoring the call by the NUM requesting them to embark on secondary strike in support of the current industrial action. All employees, including members of the NUM, reported for duty today and production at the refineries remains unaffected.
In view of the fact that the industrial action by members of NUM has not had the desired effect, namely acceptance by the Company of NUM's 10% demand, management is of the view that the point has been reached where this industrial action has failed to achieve the desired effect. It is therefore dysfunctional and the parties' positions are not reconcilable.
Anglo Platinum management would like to announce that it is the company's intention to implement its final offer on Wednesday, 4 October 2000 to all its employees, backdated to 1 July 2000. The NUM and its members have been notified about the company's intention. Management remains hopeful that the union will reconsider its position and accept the company's final offer.
The Company further wishes to point out that the same final offer has been accepted by all other recognised unions and associations who together with non-unionised employees constitute the majority of employees in the affected bargaining unit (about 70%).

Agreement Signed with Mouthpeace Workers Union 27 September 2000
Amplats is pleased to announce that the Mouthpeace Workers Union (MPWU)this morning signed an agreement with the company concluding the annualwage negotiations. The union accepted the offer of a 9% increase for the current year and a further increase of 9% for 2001. This offer has now been accepted by all Amplats’ unions and associations representing some 50% of the workforce. In addition, Amplats also has 7 500 employees who are not unionized and certain other categories are not included in these numbers.
This means that, in effect, around 70% of Amplats employees have now accepted the company’s offer. The NUM has 13 700 members of which less than 10 000 are currently on strike.
Management also announces that a meeting is currently in progress between the company and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at Rustenburg in an attempt to resolve the current impasse. The company remains hopeful that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) would reconsider their position and accept the company’s final offer of 9% for both 2000 and 2001.

Industrial Action update 21 September 2000
Amplats is concerned about the confusing and conflicting statements reported in the media regarding the current industrial action by members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) at the company's mines. The media quotes NUM as saying that the union represents "some 20 000" members at Amplats. The media further quotes NUM as denying the fact that the Labour Court granted the Company an interdict restraining its members at the refineries from taking part in the current strike. Management also noted with concern the distorted information regarding the Provident Fund contributions.
Management wishes to place on record the following: -
- NUM represents 13 713 employees at all Amplats' mines and 498 employees in the refineries. In total, they represent 14 211 employees out of a total workforce of 43 000 employees;
- On Wednesday, 20 September 2000, the Labour Court granted the company an interdict restraining NUM members at the refineries from t
