Anglo Platinum is pleased to announce that it is proceeding with a project to produce an additional 94 000 ounces of platinum per annum from UG2 ore at its Rustenburg Platinum Mine's Union Section.
This project is part of Anglo Platinum's announced programme to expand its production by 1,5 million ounces of platinum from 2,0 million ounces in 1999 to 3,5 million ounces of platinum by 2006. The announced Amandelbult UG2, Lebowa, Middelpunt Hill, Bafokeng-Rasimone, Maandagshoek, Kroondal, Waterval and Union Section UG2 expansion projects now total 1,2 million ounces of the 1,5 million ounces programme referred to above. Further projects covering the remainder of approximately 0,3 million ounces will be announced in due course.
The project at Union Section involves the expansion of the UG2 seam, using the existing infrastructure at Spud and Richard shafts and includes the development of a new decline from surface. The capacity of the existing Mortimer concentrator will be increased to treat the additional UG2 ore produced.
The Union Section project, which will be funded from internal sources, is expected to cost some R423 million (2000 money), including a 10% contingency, and is made up as follows:
Union Section R174 million
Mortimer Concentrator R218 million
surface Infrastructure R 31 million
Total R423 million
It is expected that the project will be completed within 24 months and steady state production will be achieved in the first quarter of 2003.
