The Waterval UG2 Project

11 September, 2000

Anglo Platinum is pleased to announce that it is proceeding with a project to produce an additional 395 000 ozs of platinum per annum at its Rustenburg Section (the Waterval project).

This project is part of Anglo Platinum's announced programme to expand its production by 1,5 million ozs from 2 million ozs of platinum in 2000 to 3,5 million ozs of platinum by 2006. The announced Amandelbult UG2, Lebowa Middelpunt Hill, Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum, Maandagshoek and the Waterval expansion projects now total 1,106 million ozs of the 1,5 million ozs programme referred to above. Further projects covering the remainder of approximately 0,4 million ozs will be announced in due course.

The project at Rustenburg Section (the Waterval project) involves the exploitation of the UG2 seam, using the infrastructure at the Brakspruit, Bleskop and Paardekraal vertical shafts (which were initially established to mine the Merensky seam).

Secondly, the project includes the establishment of a new UG2 mine on the farm Waterval.

In addition, a new, dedicated 400 ktpm concentrator will be constructed to treat the ore from both these new resources.

The Waterval project is expected to cost some R1 310 m (2000 money) and is made up as follows:

Rustenburg Section R 160 m
Waterval Mine R 400 m
Concentrator R 750 m
R1 310 m

It is expected that around 500 new jobs will be created in the Rustenburg area.

The project requires an amendment to the existing Environment Management Programme and mining authorisation.

It is expected that the project will be completed within 17 months.
