Amplats and NUM reach agreement

08 February, 2000

Amplats is pleased to announce that Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR) management and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) reached an agreement on Monday, February 7, 2000 regarding wages and other conditions of employment. The basis of the agreement is an 8% increase on basic wages, effective from 1 January 2000. NUM represents 260 employees in the junior bargaining unit.

Meanwhile, the strike by ± 80 members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) at Amplats’ RBMR is continuing. The Union, which represents 291 employees in the junior bargaining unit, rejected the Company’s final offer of 8%, which is identical to that accepted by NUM. Production has not been affected by this strike action. RBMR employs 1 200 employees and Amplats’ total workforce numbers ± 40 000 employees.
