Anglo Platinum and the Northern Province Government are pleased to announce that, as part of the company’s expansion strategy, Anglo Platinum intends developing a smelter in the Pietersburg area. The current cost estimate for the project will be R1,306 billion (in July 2001 money terms).
The project will result in some 1 000 new permanent and temporary jobs being created. Furthermore, this considerable investment, together with the significant foreign exchange generated from the sale of the additional metal, will favourably impact on the South African economy to the benefit of all stakeholders. It is expected that the project will be completed within 22 months, subject to expedient completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and successful conclusion of utility supply contracts.
Anglo Platinum has already announced that a new mine, Maandagshoek, producing 162 000 ounces and costing R1,3 billion in 2000 money terms, will come into operation by 2004. The Group will announce further such projects as and when they are approved by the Board. The current cost estimate for the additional mining and associated processing expansions is R12,6 billion (in 2000 money terms).
