NUM Dispute at Precious Metal Refinery
Amplats’ management advises that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has given notice of strike action commencing on Monday, 28 February 2000, at its Rustenburg Precious Metals Refiners (PMR) after annual substantive negotiations resulted in deadlock.
However, management and union officials have subsequently met and have agreed to continue discussions over the weekend in an effort to resolve the matter.
The current dispute affects only members in the junior bargaining unit at PMR of which NUM represents 156 employees. About 80 NUM members are currently picketing the plant in a peaceful demonstration. The total workforce at PMR numbers 551. The Company has taken the necessary action to ensure that production will not be affected if the strike does go ahead.Issued by Group Public Affairs.
