Wage Negotiations in Deadlock

28 September, 1999

Amplats Management advises that the annual substantive negotiations with the National Employees' Trade Union (NETU) for the 1999/2000 period have resulted in a deadlock following a CCMA process. The company's final offer included an 8% wage increase which the union rejected.

Consequently the company received a notice from NETU in terms of the Labour Relations Act advising of the intended industrial action by its members. As of Tuesday, 28 September 1999 some of the NETU members have embarked on protected industrial action at Rustenburg’s Amandelbult and Union Sections. The Company and the Union are currently in discussions with a view to resolving this matter soonest.

The stoppage is currently having no effect on production as the bulk of employees remain at work. Out of a total of over 38 000 employees, NETU represents about 800 with only 300 of their members participating in industrial action at present.
