Maandagshoek Mine Project announced

Anglo American Platinum Corporation Limited announces that a platinum group metals mine will be developed on the farms Maandagshoek, Driekop, Winterveld and Onverwacht on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex.

The feasibility study envisages a mine producing 200 000 tons of UG2 ore per month utilising two shafts.The study indicates a capital cost in 2000 money terms of some R1,35 billion, with an annual production of some 162000 oz Platinum. It is currently envisaged that approximately 1500 people would be employed by the mine.

A detailed Environmental Management Programme will be submitted for approval prior to finalisation of planning. Once this has been completed, work will commence on the establishment of the mine, planned for the first half of 2000.

Anglo American Platinum Corporation Limited wishes to incorporate Economic Empowerment in the mine. Following a detailed selection process, discussions between Anglo American Platinum Corporation Limited and African Rainbow Minerals (Pty) Limited as leader for an Empowerment Consortium, are taking place.When these discussions are concluded a further announcement will be made.
