Amandebult UG2 Project

20 January, 1999

Amplats is pleased to announce the expansion of its mining and concentrating activities at the Amandelbult Section of Rustenburg Platinum Mines, located in the Northern Province.

The project, involving the milling of an additional 60,000 tons per month of UG2 ore and the enhancement of concentrator capacity and recoveries, will add 72 000 ounces of platinum to the mine’s annual output when full production is achieved in the last quarter of 2000. The expansion will create approximately 500 new jobs and is estimated to cost R202m, escalated to completion.

Amplats continues to pursue its strategy of investing heavily in the promotion and development of the platinum group metals markets in order to provide opportunities for continued growth in the exploitation of its mineral resources. Furthermore, this expansion is consistent with the objective of moving the Company down the cost curve.

The project at Amandelbult Section is additional to the announced expansions at Bafokeng Rasimone, Potgietersrust Platinums and Lebowa Platinum, all of which are proceeding on schedule. When complete, at an escalated cost of R1,8bn, these expansions will increase the Company’s annual platinum production capacity to more than 2,25m ounces and provide approximately 4500 new job opportunities in the Northern and North West Provinces.
