Lebowa Platinum Mine retrenchments

18 June, 1999

Following a history of poor operational performance at Amplats' Lebowa Platinum Mines and an extended process of consultation with employee representatives seeking ways of addressing the matter as required by the Labour Relations Act, it was decided to embark upon retrenchments at the mine.

Subsequent to discussions between the MEC for Finance, Trade, Industry and Tourism of the Northern Province and Amplats on 26 May 1999, and taking into account the company's desire to minimise the social consequences of such reductions, it was agreed to delay the implementation of these retrenchments.

During this extension, management engaged in further discussions to provide employee representatives with further opportunities to provide constructive solutions to the company's poor performance.

Having exhausted all alternatives, Amplats must unfortunately announce that it has terminated the services of 415 employees at the mine on Friday, 18 June1999.
