This release is made in response to media coverage and reports made on the 17 June 1999 regarding off mine violence which occurred at Nkaneng informal settlement near Rustenburg on 16 June 1999.
Nkaneng informal settlement is situated close to Bleskop Hostel, part of Rustenburg Platinum Mines (RPM) and is not situated on mine owned land. Many mine employees and their families reside in the settlement.
RPM medical and security staff assisted injured persons after the incident. Hospitalization was provided where necessary.
The incident would appear to be the result of tensions between rival groups within the settlement.
RPM regrets the loss of life and injury.
