Lebowa Middelpunt Hill Project

20 August, 1998

EXPANSION AT LEBOWA PLATINUM MINES LIMITED

MIDDELPUNT HILL

Amplats has pleasure in announcing an expansion at its Atok Operation on the Eastern rim of the Bushveld complex some 80km South East of Pietersburg.

The expansion is referred to as the Middelpunt Hill UG2 project.

The mining method to be used will take the form of down dip (retreat) mining, and the resource which is situated some 30 metres above natural ground level will be accessed via an adit.

The planned tonnage to be mined is 30 ktpm at a head grade of 5.12g/t which will eventually add another 21 000 ounces of Platinum to Atok’s annual production. Full production will be achieved in 14-18 months from the commencement date and the final escalated cost of the project will be R71m.

Atok’s process plant is capable of milling approximately 100 000 tpm and some innovative process enhancements in the plant will render it capable of handling any extra tonnage.
