Anglo American Platinum has been included as one of 484 companies across 45 countries in the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) – an index that aims to track the performance of publicly listed companies on their transparency in gender-related reporting.
Ordered by market capitalisation and measured by a social survey created by Bloomberg, the GEI measures gender equality across five pillars: female leadership and talent pipeline, equal pay and gender pay parity, inclusive culture, anti-sexual harassment policies and cultivating a pro-women brand.
Anglo American Platinum is one of only eight companies in South Africa to feature in the GEI and one of 32 materials sector companies, with a score above average in the global survey.
Peter T. Grauer, chairman of Bloomberg, said the number of companies submitting their surveys and meeting the threshold for inclusion was up 16% year-on-year and disclosure continues to improve, highlighting a resolve to raise the bar for social change.
“Companies continue to show their dedication to diversity and inclusion in the workplace through their participation. As encouraging as it is to see more companies around the world showing their commitment to inclusion, we are still far from gender equality being a global corporate standard. We believe the GEI framework is an important tool companies can use to mark their progress in inclusion, unite as a corporate community and drive social change,” Grauer said.
Anglo American Platinum CEO Natascha Viljoen said: “We are extremely pleased to be recognised in the GEI for the fourth consecutive year, and equally celebrate the overall year-on-year growth in the number of peer companies listed in the index. An expanding index can only mean that corporate cultures in South Africa and globally are starting to benchmark against the best companies in the world and driving change. We are proud to continue our efforts to build a workplace where everyone can fulfil their potential – regardless of their gender, race or religious background. We will continue to use the GEI as a tool in our quest for continuous improvement as an employer of choice.”
