Anglo American Platinum is saddened by the death of one of its employees, who died as a result of a clash which occurred when the South African Police Services (SAPS) was dispersing a group of protesting employees who had barricaded a road leading to Union mine with burning tyres and rocks on Friday, 7 February 2014.
A violent outbreak occurred when the SAPS sought to disperse the striking employees, and one of the protestors was fatally injured. It is understood that the deceased is an AMCU shop steward. The family of the deceased employee has been contacted and will be provided with full support and counseling by the Company.
The Company notes with concern the significant increase of violence and intimidation incidences since the commencement of the strike by members of AMCU on Thursday, 23 January 2014.
Another employee was badly assaulted earlier by protestors earlier in the week on his way to Khuseleka mine and remains in a critical but stable condition; 14 vehicles have been damaged by protestors, and one vehicle and an excavator were set alight.
Chris Griffith, Chief Executive Officer said “It is with sadness that we learnt of the death of one of our employees. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased. We strongly urge striking employees to adhere to the picketing rules and remain within the picketing designated areas as agreed with AMCU. We condemn any act of violence, intimidation and damage to property.”
Anglo American Platinum is also working with key local stakeholders in bringing peace and calm to the affected areas.
Further updates will be provided as and when required.
