Accordion icon white How long does a Bursary with Anglo American last?Icon Plus

Bursaries will be awarded for the period of study (one year), subject to the rights of the Company to review, suspend, reinstate or cancel the Bursary. Bursaries will be reviewed on a regular basis and ideally re-awarded annually provided the Bursar meets the academic requirements set for them, and conducts themselves in a manner that is deemed acceptable by the Bursar’s tertiary institution, as well as by Anglo American.

Accordion icon white What are Power of Attorney and Surety, and why do they matter?Icon Plus

Power of Attorney: The Bursar will be required to sign a Power of Attorney authorizing the Company to obtain access, from the Tertiary Institution, to all records reflecting the Bursar’s academic progress and conduct at the Institution.

Surety: The Bursar’s Parents or Legal Guardians will be required to sign and accept a Deed of Suretyship for the payment of the Bursar’s obligations, where and if the Bursary Agreement is terminated, or if the Bursar chooses not to take up permanent employment with Anglo American once their studies have been successfully completed.

Accordion icon white What does Anglo American do to support their Bursary Students during their studies?Icon Plus

Anglo American is committed to assisting their Bursary Students in becoming as successful in their studies as possible, and may support Bursars in the following ways:

  • Dedicated teams stay in regular contact with Bursars
  • Bi-annual or quarterly visits with Bursars
  • Provision of extra tutoring and / or mentoring where required
  • Access to the Anglo American Employee Assistance Programme (confidential counselling)
Accordion icon white Can I accept funding from another source if I’ve been awarded an Anglo American Bursary?Icon Plus

Bursars may not accept any other Bursary, grant, loan or other form of financial assistance whilst benefiting from an Anglo American Bursary unless prior, written approval from the Company has been obtained.

If a Bursar receives a merit award from their tertiary institution during their studies, Anglo American will permit the Bursar a maximum withdrawal of R 5 000.00 in cash, after written consent from the Company has been obtained. If the award is worth more than R 5 000.00, the balance amount will be put towards the Bursar’s tuition fees, thereby reducing the bursary contribution to the company.

Accordion icon white Can I change my course of study after I’ve been awarded a Bursary?Icon Plus

If a change to a course of study is not in line with the Company’s requirements, the Bursary may be terminated, and the full Bursary Obligation will need to be paid back to Anglo American.

Written consent from Anglo American will be required prior to you discontinuing, interrupting, altering or suspending your studies, or abandoning any subject before obtaining your Qualification.

Accordion icon white Once a Bursar has completed their studies, what next?Icon Plus

Once a Bursar has successfully completed their studies, they will be required to take up permanent employment within Anglo American, and remain employed for the number of years equal to the number of years of study funded by the Company (subject to availability of job opportunities).

For example, three years of study = three years’ work back period/service obligation.

If the Bursar successfully completes his/her service obligation, Anglo American will have no further claims against the Bursar.

If Anglo American is unable to provide permanent employment at the time that the Bursar qualifies, the Bursar will be released from all obligations.

If the Bursar chooses not to take up an offer of employment where an offer exists, or if a Bursar fails to complete the Service Obligation, Anglo American will be entitled to recover the amount of the total Bursary, plus incidental costs.

Accordion icon white What role should my Parents and/or Guardians play if I am awarded an Anglo American Bursary?Icon Plus

We encourage Parents and/or Guardians to assist you with your Bursary application and to provide the necessary guidance and support.

Where an Anglo American Bursary is awarded, the Company will require the Parents/Guardians to sign Surety*as per the Bursary Agreement. This surety is an undertaking by the Parents/Guardians that if the student does not fully meet the Bursary Contract, such as failing or not complying the Code of Conduct, then the Parents/Guardians will have to refund the awarded Bursary money to Anglo American. All communication will take place directly with the Bursar.
