The human resource function within each organisation is unique although there are similarities from company to company in the major activities that are undertaken. These major activities are:
The vision and business strategy of the company are translated into quantifiable and achievable HR related goals for the whole organisation. Work is then organised to reflect cost effective manning structures, which will ensure that the goals of the organisation are achieved. Human resources planning then involve a comparison between the present work force in terms of numbers of staff and their capabilities, and future requirements to achieve the goals of the company. Plans will then be put in place to correct any shortfalls.
HR specialists are involved in recruitment and selection of prospective employees and their eventual placement in the appropriate work environment. The recruiting process includes assessments of prospective employees: this assists with the selection process. Inducting new employees into the new work roles contributes to enhanced productivity.
Anglo Platinum has introduced performance management best practices, where employees focus on individual and team performances throughout the organisation's value chain by performing against predetermined goals and measures. The HR specialist will be expected to contribute in facilitating these processes to ensure that there is an increase in organisational effectiveness and secondly that individual development needs are met.
Once new employees are brought into the company or when new practices or equipment are introduced, it is necessary to train the staff so that they have the skills and knowledge to perform effectively. The HR specialist has a central role to play in designing and implementing training programmes, and then the subsequent assessment of learners to make sure that they are competent to do the job into which they have been appointed.
Staff must be paid fairly for the contribution that they make. Remuneration systems must be designed; implemented and controlled in such a way that staff feels that they are indeed fairly compensated for their efforts. Again, this is an area in which the HR specialist plays a key role.
Employees' well being has an impact on their performance at work. It is thus in the company's best interests that staff are kept in a good state of health, both emotionally and physically. The company offers assistance to employees who are undergoing emotional crises or who have addiction problems, and the HR practitioner is the custodian of such programmes.
The success and viability of business depends on the sound relationships between management and employee groupings such as trade unions and associations. It is the HR specialist's responsibility to make sure that structures are put in place to ensure that healthy communications and relations exist between management and employees.
HR specialists will, during their careers, be involved in most, if not all, of the major HR areas of activity. With this background, they will be well prepared for a future general management role in the HR department or alternatively to develop into a specialist in one of the HR fields. Anglo Platinum makes sure that its HR specialists are given this broad exposure and development.
